When you Meet Milk At Six

Mijn favoriete stoffenmerken, volgens mij doen ze het erom.... Keer op keer lijken de collecties van meetMILK met haar prachtige tencels, Atelier Brunette met hun warme gedempte tonen en de on-trend french terry's van See You at Six perfect op elkaar afgestemd. Wel handig als maker, want een capsule wardrobe creëren is als naaister nog nooit zo makkelijk geweest.

My favourite fabric brands, they must do it on purpose... Time and time again the collections of Meet Milk fabrics with their incredible tencel, Atelier Brunettes with their gorgeous warm muted tones and See You at Six fabrics with their on trend french terry's seem to compliment each other perfectly. They must do it on purpose, right?! As a maker I love it! Creating a capsule wardrobe has never been easier.

Toen ik deze pinstripe Tencel twill van MeetMilk naast de french terry van See You at Six legde maakte mijn hart direct een sprongetje. Het klassieke van de krijtstreep met het speelse en romantische van de bloemenprint van See You at Six. Zelfs toen dit nog een stapeltje stof in mijn handen was, zag ik de outfit al voor me.

When I saw this tencel twill by Meet Milk next to the french terry by See You at Six they seemed to be made for eachother. The classic pinstripe together with the playful flowery print, it was love.... From the moment I held this pile of fabrics in my hand I had the vision of this outfit in my head.

Patroonkeuze
Zo snel als het plaatje in mijn hoofd ontstaat, zo langzaam komt dat soms in werkelijkheid tot stand. Het patroon voor de broek was er als eerste. De Marett broek van Seamwork trok direct mijn oog van zodra ze uitkwam. Een echt palazzo broek met wijde pijpen en diepe plooien. Heel chique én heel comfortabel, win-win! Voor de top bleef ik twijfelen. Doordat de broek al behoorlijk wat volume heeft, zou een aansluitende top het mooist zijn. Ik twijfelde over de Aster van La Maison Victor, maakte er zelfs al één om uit te proberen. Maar moest het nodige veranderen, want veel te wijd, en besloot toen dat dit het toch niet helemaal was... Ineens bedacht ik me dat ik ooit de Retro Jumper had getest voor Studio DressMe, een retro aansluitende top.... Perfect voor op deze broek!!!

Naainotities
De Marett broek maakte ik in maat 10. In eerste instantie was ik van plan om enkel de tailleband te proefnaaien. De tailleband is namelijk het enige aan de broek wat aansluitend is, voor de rest is deze broek zo wijd dat het wel heel gek moest lopen dat hij niet zou passen. Uiteindelijk besloot ik voor de zekerheid toch een volledige proefversie te maken. Gelukkig maar.... want zo ontdekte ik dat er twee vouwen aan de voorkant wel heel oncharmant naar mijn kruis trokken Op dat soort momenten ben ik blij dat ik nog altijd naailessen volg. In de naailessen besloten we dat er meer ronding in de taillenaad van de broekspijpen moest komen. In het patroon loopt deze helemaal recht en na hertekenen heeft dit nu een mooie curve gekregen. Een stuk beter! Verder kortte ik de broek nog een heel stuk in. En ik voegde een trensstiksel bij de opening van de zakken toe, zodat deze op de stresspunten wat extra stevigheid hebben.
Van de top kon ik me nog herinneren dat ik nog niet helemaal tevreden was over de versie die ik naaide tijdens de test. Ik paste mijn oude testversie nog eens en besloot om één maat groter te maken.  Ik naaide nu maat 38. Dit zit een stuk meer naar mijn zin. De mouwen knipte ik op een tussenlengte en de halsbies wat breder, gewoon omdat dat mijn voorkeur heeft.

Review stof en patronen
Deze broek die heel klassiek en chique oogt is stiekem nog comfortabeler dan een pyjama broek.... Voornamelijk doordat tencel twill echt een zaligheid om te dragen is... Deze stofsoort van meetMILK is echt geweldig... maar de wasvoorschriften moeten  strak opgevolgd worden. Wanneer je dat niet doet, zoals ik... houd er dan rekening dat ze mogelijk niet egaal van kleur blijft. Er kwamen bij mij na het voorwassen wat witte strepen/verkleuringen in te staan. Het geeft de stof karakter. Zelf vind ik het wel wat hebben, dat een stof wat gaat leven. Maar dat moet wel bij je passen! Niet elke tencel van meetMILK heeft trouwens deze eigenschap, dus check dit gewoon even bij je stoffenwinkel als je twijfelt! Tencel valt ongelooflijk soepel, net als haar minder duurzame broer viscose. Het betekent niet dat de stof kreukvrij is, zoals ook op de foto's wel te zien is ;) Voor kreukvrije stoffen zul je toch echt in de synthetische stoffenhoek moeten zoeken.
Over de broek zoals ze nu zit ben ik heel enthousiast. Toch ben ik over het patroon minder tevreden. Wanneer ik foto's van andere naaisters op Instagram bekijk dan valt me op dat ik niet de enige was met gekke vouwen  die richting het kruis wezen. Het is naar mijn  idee een patroon fout. Maar behalve dat vind ik het een prachtig model broek. Toch zou ik een volgende wijde broek liever zonder plooien maken. Ik heb het gevoel dat het mijn heupen groter doet lijken dan ze zijn. Ook zal ik waarschijnlijk niet snel weer kiezen voor een broek met een rits in de middenachternaad. Ik vind het niet zo makkelijk uit- en (vooral) aantrekken. Bovendien een blinde rits, zo pontificaal op je achterwerk, moet er perfect in zitten. Ik heb echt wel even gezweet op het perfect plaatsen van de rits en kwam er zo achter dat deze stof niet zo van een tornmesje houdt. Uiteindelijk heb ik toch een hele kleine ladder in de stof gekregen. Niet direct zichtbaar, maar toch ...
Over het patroon van de top ben ik gematigd enthousiast. De pasvorm vind ik echt heel mooi. Maar het patroon zelf is niet zo gebruiksvriendelijk. Elke maat staat apart getekend, dus het is lastig om tussen verschillende maten te graderen. Er zijn geen aparte patroondelen voor de tailleband, mouwbiezen en halsbies op de patroonbladen, in plaats daarvan staan de afmetingen hiervoor in de werkbeschrijving. De werkbeschrijving is heel uitgebreid met duidelijke foto's. Helaas staan de naai-instructies niet in een pdf bestand, maar is het op tumblr op te zoeken. Dit vind ik, door het vele scrollen, niet prettig werken. Desondanks verwacht ik deze top toch vaker te gaan maken, juist omdat het een fijn basisstuk is met een mooie pasvorm. En dat is uiteindelijk waar het om gaat!

Pattern choice
As fast as the image of an outfit pops in my head, as slowly the outfit sometimes gets made. I was fairly quick in choosing a pants pattern. The Marett pants by Seamwork caught  my eye as soon as it came out. A true wide legged palazzo pants with deep pleats in the front. Very stylish ánd very comfortable to wear, I like! But for the top I kept going back and forth with ideas. As the bottom is rather voluminous I decided to keep it fairly fitted on top. I contemplated making an Aster sweater by La Maison Victor. I even made a trial sweater that needed a lot of altering, because it was way too loose for my taste. In the end I decided to drop it. Suddenly I realised that I tested the Retro Jumper for Studio DressMe once. It ticked all the right boxes: fitted, right length, simple yet elegant. The perfect top to match this high waisted pants.

Sewing notes
I made a size 10 Marett pants. At first I wanted to only make a muslin of the waistband, as it is the only fitted part of the pants. I thought it would be unlikely to have any issues with the otherwise loose fitting pants. But I decided to make a full muslin of the pants anyway. Luckily so, as this is how I discovered there were  were strange folds down towards my crotch. I took my muslin to sewing class to figure out the right alteration to fix it. We found the top/waist seam of the legs is completely straight and this is what caused this issue. So we adjusted it to make the front waist seam more curved to adjust for a more curved body ;) It is much better now! I also shortened the legs quite a bit and made pretty bar-tacks at the pockets for added strength at the stress points.
I remembered from testing the top that I was not completely satisfied with the fit. So I tried it on again and decided it would be much better 1 size bigger. So I made size 38. The sleeves are cut at an in-between length and the neckband a bit wider, both to my personal preference.

Review fabric and patterns
These pants that seem so stylish and classic are actually secret pyjama pants.... Tencel twill is simply a dream to wear. This fabric by meetMILK is fantastic..but you will have to strictly follow washing instructions! I did not know about this. After prewashing my fabric I had some white stripes/discoloration, which I think gives the fabric character. I like how fabric has a bit of a life to it. But if this is not your thing then beware. Not all tencels by meetMILK have this issue though, so check at your fabricstore! Tencel is incredibly drapey, just like its less sustainable brother rayon. However it is not completely wrinkle or crease free, as you can see in the pictures. If you like your fabrics wrinkle free then you will probably have to shop in the synthetic fabrics department....
I am very happy with my Marett pants and the fit as it is now. However I do think the issues I had are actually a flaw in the pattern. I noticed a lot of other Marett pants on Instagram also showed the fabric folding weirdly towards the crotch area. I am happy I was able to fix this problem. Yet I will probably choose a pattern without pleats next time. I feel like pleats add unnecassery volume where I do not want it. Also next time I will move the zipper to the sideseam. I find it a bit of a hassle to get in and out of my pants. Also the zipper needs to be put in perfectly when it is showcased right bang in the middle of you derriere. I struggled getting it right and found this fabric does not like a seam ripper that much. 
The pattern for the top gets a mixed review as well. I really love the fit and style of this top. But I found the pattern itself not very user friendly. Every size needs to be printed out seperately, so grading from one size to the other is tricky. There are no separate pattern pieces for the waistband, cuffs or neckband. Instead you can find the measurements in the instructions. The insructions are elaborate, with clear photo illustrations for each step. However you do not get the instructions in a separate pdf file. Instead you have to look them up in Tumblr. It involves a lot of scrolling up and down and this really made it unclear to me. Despite this I think I might make this top more often, simply because it is such a nice basic top with a good fit. And that is what eventually really counts!
