Paarden sweaters + mini tutorial

Soms besluit je iets te maken waarvan je van tevoren weet dat je dit maar beter in tweevoud kan doen. De jaloezie van één van de zussen zou simpelweg té groot zijn. En om eerlijk te zijn snap ik dat wel.... Ik wil er bijna één voor mezelf.... Nu wilde ik niet twee exact dezelfde sweaters maken. Twinning is leuk, maar er zijn grenzen. Dus maakte ik de sweaters in verschillende kleuren en in spiegelbeeld. Zoals zusjes, hetzelfde en toch anders. Soms dol op elkaar en soms keren ze elkaar even de rug toe ;)

Sometimes you make something and already know beforehand that you'd better make it in twofold. One sister would have be green with envy if I made this sweater for only one of them. I cannot blame them. I almost want one for myself as well...So before even starting I decided to make two. Twinning is winning after all! Exact twinning is not my style. So I decided to make the sweaters in different colours and mirror image. Like sisters, the same, yet different. Sometimes looking at eachother, sometimes turning their back ;)

Het idee voor de truien haalde ik van 'de zussen' op Instagram. Hoe kon ik dat geweldige idee nou niet kopiëren? Ik maakte de eerste van deze sweaters tijdens een naaiweekend. Het was met stip het leukste wat ik er maakte. Het is gewoon zo leuk om rustig één voor één alle details af te werken en iets moois onder je handen te zien ontstaan. Eenmaal thuis maakte ik in een ochtendje de tweede sweater ook. Het is iets meer werk dan een gewone basic sweater, maar dat is het meer dan waard! Want zeg nou zelf: paardenmeisjes kan je niet blijer maken dan met een paardentrui.....

Stofkeuze
Ik gebruikte een french terry van See You at Six. In de mouwnaad komen behoorlijk wat lagen bij elkaar: het hoofd, het oor, het halster en de manen. Een dikke sweaterstof zou daarom minder geschikt zijn. Met een dunnere stof zoals tricot zou het er al gauw wat slapjes uitzien. Deze french terry's zijn er dus echt perfect voor. Er is altijd wel een kleur te vinden die mooi past bij de draagster en haar droompaard. Alle fournituren komen van lokale winkels of de markt. Grote dank vooral voor de marktvrouw die speciaal voor mij haar hele kraam overhoop haalde om de wollen franjeband te zoeken, die ergens verstopt onderin de kraam lag.

Mini tutorial
Mocht je dit na willen maken heb ik kort alle stappen op een rijtje gezet. Geen uitgebreide fotohandleiding, want ik bedacht me achteraf pas dat een tutorial wel leuk zou zijn....

Algemeen:
Als basis gebruikte ik de Mitch sweater van La Maison Victor. Maar ieder basis sweater patroon kan je hiervoor gebruiken.

Op alle plekken waar ik iets vastnaaide heb ik aan de achterzijde versteviging aangebracht: het hoofd waar het halster en wimpers zitten, het voorpand waar het hoofd vast gestikt wordt, de mouw waar de manen zitten.
Om mijn eigen leven makkelijker te maken gebruikte ik wondertape ipv spelden bij het vastnaaien van de sier-en franjebandjes.

• Knip het patroon volgens de omschrijving, maar knip één mouw en mouwboord volledig uit de stof in dezelfde kleur van het paardenhoofd. Let op dat je de juiste mouw in de juiste kleur knipt!

Hoofd eindigt onder schoudernaad.

• Het hoofd van het paard tekende ik uit de losse hand eerst op papier.  Toen het naar mijn zin was knipte ik het uit de stof. Wel zorgde ik er voor dat het net niet in de schoudernaad en zijnaad uitkwam. Zo krijg je geen gekke verdikkingen. 

Uiteinde horizontale bandje is weggewerkt onder het verticale bandje.

• Naai sierbandjes op het hoofd vast voor het halster. Eerst het horizontale daarna het verticale bandje. Het uiteinde van het horizontale bandje laat je eindigen onder het verticale bandje. De uiteindes van het verticale sierbandje liet ik wat langer en vouwde dit naar de achterzijde alvorens het vast te naaien. Op deze manier heb je een nette afwerking van de bandjes en geen risico dat ze in de was gaan rafelen.
• Voor de wimpers gebruikte ik een klein stukje franjeband, maar je kan ook een oog met de hand borduren 
• Als alle details aangebracht zijn, kun je het hoofd op het voorpand appliceren. Ik zette het hoofd eerst vast met Vliesofix en naaide vervolgens voor extra stevigheid met een zigzagsteek langs de rand. 
• Net als het hoofd heb ik het oor eerst op papier uitgetekend. Knip het oor uit dubbele stof. Naai het oor met de goede kanten op elkaar, maar laat de onderzijde open, geef knipjes in de naadwaarde en draai het oor met de goede kant naar buiten. Zet het oor met een grote steek vast  op het voorpand/hoofd op de plek waar je hem mooi vind met het open uiteinde langs het armsgat.
• Voor de manen gebruikte ik kant-en-klaar wollen franjeband. Je kan dit ook zelf maken van een bol wol. Ik naaide het vast over de hele lengte van de mouw. De manen moeten wel wat bijgeknipt worden bij de pols, anders kan het nogal een kliederboel worden tijdens het eten ;) 
• Nadat al deze details zijn aangebracht kun je de trui zoals gebruikelijk in elkaar naaien. Eventueel kun je op de plekken waar veel lagen bij elkaar komen de naadwaarde proberen uit te dunnen. Ik knipte de naadwaarde van het oor bijvoorbeeld flink weg. En pulkte en knipte zoveel mogelijk van de manen binnen de naadwaarde weg.

The idea for these sweaters came from Instagram from 'dezussen' . I knew I had to copy it the moment I saw it.... I made the first of these sweaters during a sewing weekend. It was by far the funnest thing I made. It is not a complicated thing to make and can be done in a morning. I really enjoyed adding all the details one by one to see this beautiful horse sweater appear under my hands. When back home I quickly made the second sweater the next morning. It is a little bit more work then a basic sweater, but it is so worth it! Because nothing brings more joy to a horse girl then a pretty horse sweater.....

Fabric choice
I made these sweaters in french terry by See You at Six Fabrics. There is a lot of bulk at the armscye of the sleeve: appliqued head, ear and manes all come together here. So you do not want to use a too thick sweater knit. Too thin is not good either as the whole thing might end up looking kinda flimsy. This french terry turned out to be perfect. See You at Six always has a beautiful range of colours and offers matching ribbing (jay!). For sure there is  something to the liking of the little wearer and her dreamhorse. I was lucky to find all the ribbons and frills in the local haberdashery and market-stall. I am especially thankful for the lady at the market that actually almost turned her stall upside down because she knew she had those wool frills somewhere hidden underneath.

Mini tutorial
To help you get along making your own horse-sweater, I wrote out a mini tutorial. No lengthy illustrated tutorial, as it was only afterwards that I realised this might come in handy. 

General:
I started off from a basic sweater pattern. In this case it is the Mitch sweater by La Maison Victor, but any basic sweater pattern will do.
I used interfacing wherever I attached details: headstall, manes, eyelashes and the zigzag around the head itself.
To make my life simple I used wondertape instead of pins when attaching the headstall and manes. 

• Cut the pattern according to the instructions but cut one sleeve in the same fabric as the head of the horse. Be careful to cut the right arm in the right colour!
• The shape of the head I first drew on paper before cutting it out from the fabric. I took care it did not get into the shoulder seam or side seam to avoid bulk.
• Use ribbon to make a headstall. For a clean finish first attach the horizontal ribbon then you can hide the end underneath the vertical ribbon. I left the tails of the vertical ribbon long. Then I folded them over to the wrong side before sewing the ribbon in place. 
• Make eyes/eyelashes. I used a nice frill, but you also embroider eyelashes by hand.
• Now it is time to applique the head onto the front. I attached it first with Vliesofix and then secured it with a zigzag stitch all around. 
• Make an ear. Like with the head I first drew the shape I wanted on paper. Cut the ear twice/mirrored. Sew it together with right sides facing leaving the bottom open. Clip the seam allowance and turn right side out. Baste the ear in place at the armscye. 
• The manes are made from ready-made wool frill. I was so happy to find this in the haberdashery as I was already preparing myself to making the manes myself. They are attached over the whole length of the sleeve.  I cut the manes shorter towards the cuff. Otherwise having a simple dinner could become very messy.... 
• Sew the sweater together as you are used to. You might want to reduce some of the bulk at the armscye. I cut away as much of the seam allowance of the ear as possible. And I tried to trim the manes down as much as possible within the seam allowance before attaching the sleeve to the bodice and the cuffs.
